Fish Flakes, Mayo, and Seaweed
In High Priest's group, Ray hit it off with a brother who is a U.S. marine stationed here. They had a lot in common, and before we knew it, he and his wife had invited us over for dinner on Sunday night.
The Perry's made a Japanese dish called okonomiyaki. This was actually Ray's first meal when he arrived as a missionary many moons ago. I had never heard of it, so I helped in the kitchen to learn how to do it.
It is cabbage cut into strips and mixed with a small amount of pancake batter. You spread it out in a pan with a small amount of oil and cook it like a pancake. Before you flip it, you lay bacon strips (or ham slices) on top. When you flip it, it will cook the bacon and the batter.
Once it is cooked, you spread okonomiyaki sauce on top and then set it on a plate. Before eating it, you squirt mayonnaise over it, followed by a sprinkling of seaweed, green onion, and dried fish. They are quite large, almost the size of your dinner plate, so we cut them in half for the kids. It looks weird and sounds disgusting, but it was pretty darn good. And, would you believe--The Picky One even liked it!! He ate 3/4 of a whole one! I about fell over backward!
Before we left their lovely home, Sister Perry gave me three things that are almost impossible to find in Tokyo and are therefore extremely prized items--brown sugar, powdered sugar, and a jar of peanut butter! Maybe Nathan won't starve while we are here after all!!
