We have a small street near our home known by the locals as "the shopping street". We are on this street almost every day either walking to church or the metro, or just to pick up milk or an item that we need for dinner. Whenever any of us are on the shopping street, we all keep our eyes peeled for this little white truck.
This guy drives around all over Tokyo selling fire-roasted sweet potatoes out of the back of his truck. He has split firewood with him that he will occasionally feed into a metal compartment.
Above that metal compartment, these luscious sweet potatoes are roasting to sheer perfection. These things are so sweet, they are better than any candy or chocolate! None of us can resist them. He sells them by weight, so we will usually get 2-4 of the big ones and then split them up and share them.
I couldn't even make it home before snitching a little and breaking off a small piece. Sometimes, Raymond will bring these home for us as well. We totally love these! Out of all the many, many things we will miss about Japan, this guy's white truck with his wonderful sweet potatoes roasting in the back will be one of the things we will miss most.
